The increase in Sales is part of a large scale promotion of banking products within Standard Bank Branches: In the long term the question is can the banking industry survive a potential double dip. Since the banks never truly recovered from our previous recession.
Things still of concern to me in the banking industry in SA is:
- Communication Channels (Communication is only top down and reporting is only bottom up - this leaves a gap for key information not to reach the right place.)
- Duplication of Work (Much of the jobs in banking is only there to double, and tripple check other's work - if a better process was found it will reduce costs further.)
- Retention of staff (With the decreases in bonuses, and the hiring of temporary staff at a lower pay, the banks are facing the risk that they will lose key employees very easily.)
- Strategic Planning (The real question is: Can a company truly increase sales and decrease costs at the same time. As banks have decreased staff to cut costs they have also lost some of it's Sales function; This is not a reasonable solution in the long term.)
- Effect of Market Movements (How vulnerable are our SA banks to changes in the economic environment)
- Slow learning curve & lack of innovation in Products. (our banking system is very slow to adapt to competition)
